Long gone are the days of Cowart’s pink tutus and classical music. She is all about the rhythm and ethnic dance with exciting music, authentic patter and urban flair. Her southern swagger premiers star talent, but in real life this tap dancer and percussionist sports a quick wit, mischievous musicality and a clownish sense of humour with a humble laid back charm.

September 13, 2018 - So, the self-described “Florida tap dance ambassadors” created the Florida Tap Dance Project, which presents its first Dunedin Tap Dance Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15. “We wanted to create more opportunities for people here locally,” Cowart said. “We wanted to give back to the community.”

After I graduated from Largo in 2015, I ended of joining the NY Cast of Stomp," said Kayla Cowart. Cowart coordinated the huge effort that is now embraced by the city of Dunedin.

Sep 20, 2018 - As a first-time event, The Dunedin Tap Dance Festival was a great community success and it will be back next year. “Florida enjoys a thriving tap dance industry,” Kayla Cowart explained. “Florida tap dancers are an integral part of our country’s national tap dance community and the Tampa Bay area pulsates at the heart of it.” Cowart’s dream is to have Florida’s tapping feet be heard and recognized from coast-to-coast and the Dunedin Tap Dance Festival has helped to make her vision a reality.

Down in the East Village on the southern end of Manhattan, a few blocks from the ...The heart of the show for me was a trio performed by Penelope Wendtlandt, Kayla Cowart, and an uncredited guest performer. Floridian Kayla Cowart has been with the cast for two months, though you’d never know it. Her tap background finds a home in creating rhythm with the body on stage. At 19, she finds herself setting the tempo for many moments on stage, creating bass-thumping rhythms with large plastic trash bins.

Needless to say, Saturday, September 15th, was filled with tons of fun and love in the dance community.No matter where life takes us, it's important to appreciate how we got there. Kayla has truly done this. It's wonderful to see successful people giving back to their community. I am so impressed with everything Kayla has done, and I cannot wait to see what the Florida Tap Dance Project does next.
